Can't save changes - "Read Only" but attribute not set

Using W2K and Word 97, I open a document with no
attributes set. I make a change and try to save but get
an error message that says the document is Read Only.
None of the attributes show it to be read only. This only
occurs intermittently but it's a pain. Is there a
solution and/or explanation?

The explanation is probably that the Word was not closed correctly and an
orphan temporary file associated with the document was left behind - see

The other possiblity, if you are working with a document on a network
server, is that there are sharing violations, i.e., somebody else has a lock
on that file. Sometimes when that is the case a friendly message will tell
you so, but in my experience it is not consistently reported to the user in
every case.
