Can't save Excel to network/mounted volume

S

steve_bf

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel When saving to a mounted volume, the following occurs

Microsoft Excel cannot access the file 'phs3ps:docs:CEE28210'.

/Volumes/phs3ps is the name of the mount point and docs is the directory the excel file is in. The CEE28210 file is actually created as an empty file, and I get one generated every time I try to save.

We have 5 MacbookPros sharing a NAS device which is mounted with full permissions. There are also 6PCs connecting to the same NAS.

We have had no issues for the last 10 months when we started getting our first macs.

Then last week, we started getting this message. It started with just one or 2 excel files now ALL files produce this message when saving from MAC to NAS

If we save to the desktop and then copy instead of "save" we get a message "The operation cant be completed because you dont have the necessary permissions to access some of the items.

We have tried saving as both .xls and .xlsx with the same result.

This only happens in Excel.

There are no problems with Word, PPoint, jpegs or other file types.

Any suggestions or advice would be great.

Hi Steve:

The Unix User ID must be unique and have full access to the root folder of
the share.

If you're using a Windows 7 share, the dummy user NETWORK SERVICE needs the
access.

There's a blurb here which contains our distilled lack of knowledge on this
problem:
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/CantSaveToServer.html

If you get something to work, please write it up and send it to me, so the
rest of us can use it.

Hope this helps

For anyone interested, I have found a work around for this particular issue.

There have been reports of issues with 10.6.3, finder and smb shares. While I still don't know why it only affected Excel, the all I got from Microsoft (after numerous calls totaling over 3 hours) was that Excel works differently from other Office programs and they are not responsible.

I downloaded an alternate finder (xfolders) and have been able to copy .xls and .xlsx files to the network shares without issue now for 2 weeks and have 3 users doing the same.

Though saving directly from Excel is still not possible. Saving to the local drive and then copying to the mounted volume is working.

Hope this helps.
