Can't set timing to slides

Does anyone now why I can't set the timings to a show. I go to set timing/rehearse timings. When I go there nothing happens. I have to set the time manually. Also, I can't add or insert a slide from another show to the current show using the command under "Insert" --> "Insert slide from file". Why to both?

You don't get a toolbar or anything when you go to Set
Timing?

What happens when you go to Insert/Slides from File? Do
you get the dialog box?
