Can't subtotal data from query

I have done this a thousand times in Excel 2003 but cannot get it to work in
2007.
I have imported data into my spreadsheet from an external query using the
query wizard and want to subtotal some of that data based on the data change
of one of the columns however, no matter what I do, the subtotal button is
greyed out unless I am on a blank cell and then I get an error message.
Please help!
