Can't update one document

J

Jerry Magelssen

I am running XP and Word 2000. I have one 22 page document that I have been
using for some years. The last time I opened it I was unable to make any
changes to it. It opened to the first page and the scroll bar, keyboard,
nothing will work. It is just on this one document. Every other document
works fine. The information in this document is important to me so am
anxious to try to retrieve it. I even went to the shortcut that I have for
this document and right clicked and tried to print it without opening it.
It printed only pages 18 and 19. Any ideas?

The document is corrupt. I can't believe that you have been using one
document for years without having a single backup of it - so that would be
the first port of call. If you have been determinedly reckless with your
backup routine, then if you can get to the last page of the document and
select all the document except for the last paragraph mark and copy to a new
document. That might work. If not, then open with the 'recover any text from
file' option set and be prepared to put in a lot of corrective work.

I do back it up weekly but enter daily. I also make a hard copy every month
but I was hoping not to have to do a lot of re-entering of data. Thanks for
the ideas -- I will try those.
