Can't view computer screen and projection at the same time

I have PPT 97 on my Compaq laptop. When I hook up a vga
cable and project to a screen, my laptop screen goes
black. Any way I can share the image on my laptop and
the projector?

I don't know about Compaqs, but on my IBM laptop, I can
select one or the other or both by toggling <shift> <F7>.
I assume yours would be similar, perhaps with some other
key sequence though.

Some projectors like to be plugged into the laptop when you start the laptop up from OFF
Some laptops do not put a signal out the back unless something is plugged in
Some laptops need toggling e.g. Fn F5 or similar

Try pressing the Function (FN) key along with F4 (or maybe
another F key)

There will be three settings & the view will change each
time you select FN + F4

1 On Screen
2 On Projector
3 Both
