Captions skip numbers

When assigning numbers to figures in a document I'm
working on Figures 1 through 5 are handled OK, but then
the next figure is assigned 7, not 6. Why would 6 be
skipped? How can I correct?

Thanks,

hi,

I had a problem where all my captions numbered as 5 7 9 ... The problem was
that I used the "track changes" (or revision marking) function for a bit.
When I displayed the changes, Word indicated the missing numbers (6,8,..) as
deleted. So in fact, each figure had two numbers: the new and the old one,
and this all because I deleted figure 4 when that function was enabled. The
solution was simple: accept the changes (or accept all changes). then, if
necessary, ctrl-A to select all and press F9 to update all fields.

hope this helps you out
