Catalog merge sort order

I'm merging information into a directory. The catalog set-up box will repeat
5 down and 2 across. I want it to alphabetize down the left column and then
continue to the right column. Right now it is merging left to right then to
the next row--alphabetizing across rather than down. Can someone tell me how
to make it go up and down? Or tell me where to find it in the online help?

Hopefully this will be fixed in the next Publisher...

Do the merge with one row per page, in step 5 convert the merge to a publication,
manually adjust the directory by dragging the tables to the appropriate pages.
