cause record to update?

I have a single record form with a button that opens another form on a
different table. How do I cause the first form's record to be updated and
remain on the same record before opening the other form? I've tried Me.Edit,
Me.Update, Me.AddNew and none of them work. However clicking on the record
selector does save it. I need to know how to do this in Access 2000 VBA.

Me.Dirty = False
or
DoCmd.RunCommand acCmdSaveRecord
