Change highlighted text

I cannot change text or numbers in word 2003 after I highlight it. When I
highlight and attempt to type corrected text it simply places the new text
before the old text

When I highlight and attempt to type corrected text it simply places
the new text before the old text

In Tools > Options > Edit, check "Typing replaces selection".
