Change layers

Mike from Moriches

Greetings
I am using Visio Technical 5.0 I have a lot of stuff all on one drawing
page. I would like to separate some of it onto various layers. Can this be
done? If so, how? I've tried cutting and pasting, making the original layer
active, then deactivating it and making the new layer active, etc., etc.
Any instructions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike from Moriches

I don't have that version of Visio, but, you ought to be able to select all
of the shapes you want to add to a layer, right click, Format > layers, and
then check the desired layer. All select shapes ought to be assigned to the
selected layer.

Hi Wapperdude
I don't get a Layer option in the Format menu. The only way to turn
layers on and off is from Layer Properties in the View menu. (It didn't
work that way either) Tech 5.0 is pretty old, about 1998. Anyway, thanks
for trying. I appreciate it. (BTW, the Help file mentions reassigning
layers, but does not say how!)

I am using Visio 2007 and the layer properties isnt under the format
menu like you said. There is a layer properties icon at the top of the
page as well as the one listed in the view menu that you have been
using but to take items from one layer to another you have to select
the item and right click>format>layer and a window will come up with
all the unlocked layers listed. The layer(s) that the item is on will
be checked. If no boxes are checked then the item is not assigned to
any layer. You can move the item to or change the items layer by
checking and unchecking the check boxes.

If you want the item to move to a locked layer you must unlock the
layer first in the View>Layer Properties window then go back and right
click the item>format>layer and the newly unlocked layer will now be
listed.

P.S. you can select multiple items at once to be moved from one layer
to another by holding the shift key down while selecting. If you have
a lot of items on a page you can select all the items for one layer
and move them then go back to the layer properties window and turn off
the view for that layer then your window will not be so crowded. When
you are done you can go back and recheck the visible box on all items
and they will reappear.

Hope this helps!!!

My apologies, I guess my answer was too criptic in this case. Bose guy, if
you re-read your answer, and then compare to mine, you'll see that they are
the same. I saild select the desired shapes, right click, format > layers.
Your answer was better stated, but the same answer. Sorry for the confusion
and misunderstanding. I'll be more careful and thorough in the future.

Wapperdude,
You're right, I hadn't really read your repsonse. I was just
responding to Mike's problem. I think that he misunderstood also
because he was looking under the Format menu not the right
click>format menu.

Mike, Did you try what we suggested? Did it work???
