Change styles for all documents

I am using Word 2003 on Windows XP. I would like to change the formatting
of a style and have it apply to all of my Word files, past and future. When
I change the style, I see ADD TO TEMPLATE and AUTOMATICALLY UPDATE, but I am
not sure which ones I should be checking off. I have experimented but
nothing seems to apply to documents I did in the past. Is there something I
am overlooking that will allow me to get older documents to open and
automatically apply the style modifications I made???

Thank you

"Add to template" is the one you want. Absolutely *don't* check
"Automatically update." What you have to do, however, is reattach the
revised template to older docs with the "Automatically update document
styles" box checked (Tools | Templates and Add-ins).

Just tried it and it works fine. Thanks a lot.
