Changing a task to a summary task

S

Sinister

Have a problem. I have a person that created a very broad schedule. There is
a task that a user wants to now break into smaller subtasks. The problem I'm
having is that they've already got actual hours entered into the task and
once I change it to a summary task all those hours dissapear without even an
warning message. I don't want to lose the hours they've put into that task.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Sinister,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

As you would expect, a summary summaries the data of its sub-tasks. As the
summary has no sub-tasks, everything is zeroed. So, insert a new task above
the one you want and then indent it to become a sub-task under it. The new
task will then be a summary of the new sub-tasks. Create the new sub-tasks
and then apportion the actual hours between them.

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)
