Summary Task Duration incorrect

I think that this has been answered before, but I can't find the
thread.

He summary task duration is incorrect. For example I have 2 subtasks
that are Finish-to- Start, first one is 2 hours and second is 6 hours.
Summary task indicates a duration of 7 hours instead of 8. I have tried
recalculated but that doesn;t help. Any ideas?

Thanks.

redmadcap,
The duration of a summary line is NOT defined by the duration of
subtasks under it. The duration of a summary line IS the difference in
working time between the summary line start and finish. And, those two
dates are defined as the start date of the earliest subtask and the
finish date of the latest subtask.

Hope this helps.

Hello redmadcap,

Is there a lag between the finish of the first task and the start of
the second? Take a look at the time the tasks begin and end. If
you are not showing time as well as date -- see Tools > Options,
View tab.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

There is no lag between tasks, so that the sum of all durations should
be the duration of the summary task.
In fact, I have several examples where there is only one task, and we
have included a summary line. The duration of the task is 2 hours, yet
the summary this only task is 1.5 hours!

Thanks.

Hi redmadcap,

Is there a resource assigned to the task and the resource's calendar
working time is different from the project calendar?

It's fairly easy to create a situation where the duration of a
summary task is different from subtask durations when resources with
different working time definitions are involved.

For example:
Two tasks linked F to S both with 5 hours duration. The project
calendar is the "standard" 8:00 am to 12:00 and 13:00 pm to 17:00.
When no resources are assigned, the summary task duration shows 10
hours.
Task A's schedule: Oct 13 08:00 to Oct 13 14:00
Task B's schedule: Oct 13 14:00 to Oct 14 10:00

Create a resource whose working time definition is 08:00 to 12:00
and 13:00 to 19:00 - or 10 working hours per day. After assigning
the resource:
Task A's schedule: Oct 13 08:00 to Oct 13 14:00
Task B's schedule: Oct 13 14:00 to Oct 13 19:00

The summary task duration changes to 8 hours. The two additional
hours that the resource works from 17:00 to 19:00 are not working
time on the project calendar. Because no resources are assigned to
the summary task, it is the project calendar's working definition of
08:00 to 17:00 that project uses when it shows the duration. The
amount of work on the task is correct -- 10 hours.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
