changing colour of tasks contained in a rolled up summary

andy francis

Hi,

I have a problem where i need to show an activity ( which we will call fred
see FAQ 31for reason) in a rolled up task bar that is different from the
rest.

I have followed 31, to give me the lower level task and changed the colour (
say to green) but, do not know how to change the summary task bar detail to
show this colour ( other than manual correction)
I can see other areas where i can use this within the same rolled up bar for
other tasks
..
can anyone help

Hello Andy,

You can create a rolled up summary bar definition to do what I think you
are looking for. Search this newsgroup for a post with the subject
"Multiple task bars in one row" begun by "Nuncias" on March 13 for some
detailed information.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi julie, thank it works a treat one Q, you have worked this from a "top
down" scenario, as the lower tasks remain in the std MSP task blue colour..
How can I change this to work from a bottom up ?? as im not sure how (or if)
if i should somehow combine FAQ31

Hello Andy,

I'm not sure I follow your question exactly. I'm guessing you want to
be able to color code a task based upon resources assigned (your
reference to Fred from FAQ 31) as well as use the same criteria on a
rolled up summary bar?

You will need to add two new bar styles but you can use the same Flag
field in the definition for both bar styles.

For example: If you used Flag1 to mark tasks where "Fred" was assigned
and created a custom bar style to show his tasks (like FAQ 31), you can
also use Flag1 to create the a custom rolled up bar style to show Fred's
task on the summary task.

I hope this helps. If I've missed you point, sorry, let me know and
I'll try again.

hi julie, it works to a level, but i still cannot get the colour to change
automatically in either the flag1 resource or in the rolled up task - i
currenty manually can do this so they are the same.

is there a way of say calling flag 1 green so that any time i add "flag1"
into the definition field in another bar style it will select that colour

Hello Andy,

I'm sorry I'm not following your question. So, to back up a bit and
step through the process, maybe we can find where things have gone off..

I've added the Flag1 field to the Gantt Chart view (entry table). The
Flag1 field has the following formula:

IIf(Instr([Resource Names],"Fred"),Yes,No)

If I assign a resource named Fred to any task, the Flag1 field is set to
Yes. (Note: I am using the Instr function instead of just checking if
[Resource Names] = "Fred" to allow for Fred to be assigned with other
resources.)

I have a bar style called Fred set in my Gantt chart. I created the Bar
Style using Format > Bar Style in the menu, not Format Bar.

The bar style is as follows:
Name: Fred
Appearance: Green bar
Show For ... Tasks: Normal, Flag1
Row: 1
From: Start
To: Finish

The bar definition for Fred is below the regular Task bar definition and
I've added "Not Flag1" to exclude from that bar definition any task
where Flag1 = Yes.

I've also created a "Rolled Up Fred" bar definition:

Name: *Rolled Up Fred
Appearance: Green bar
Show For ... Tasks: Normal, Rolled Up, Flag1, Not Summary
Row: 1
From: Start
To: Finish

I've edited the *Rolled Up Task bar definition to "Normal, Rolled Up,
Not Summary, Not Flag1".

The tasks in the project have the "Roll up Gantt bar to summary" option
set. Now, when I assign Fred to a task, the task bar in the Gantt Chart
view turns green and the green rolls up to the summary task. However,
if I display another view (like the Tracking Gantt) the green bars for
Fred do not display. The custom bar styles I created are specific to
the Gantt Chart View. If I want to have the same formatting in other
views, I'll need to add the custom bar to each view.

Again, sorry for the confusion (on my part).
