changing tab index on word .doc

How do I change the tab index to default to another number. When I save
merged file as a rtf the tab indent will stay the same, but whenever I save
it to a word.doc it changes the tab indent.

I wanted to add something else. Whenever the tab is after a letter it stays
what I want it to, but when the tab is after a number it changes the tab.
I've already played with changing the default settings, but is there
something that tells it to index a different way if it is after a number?
