character limit using mail merge

using Publisher 2003, attempting to mail merge text into a text box. Warning
pop-up states that only 255 characters are allowed. I need to increase the
amount of characters-is this possible?

Not without using multiple fields.

Instead of

Field1: <Lots of text amounting to 500 characters>,

use:

Field1a: <First 255 characters>
Field1b: <Next 245 characters>
