Check Box Not Working

I have a Word doc that was created by someone else. It has
check boxes in it to use when filling out the document.
However, I cannot get a check to appear in any of the
check boxes. Do you know how to troubleshoot or resolve
this problem?

You may be in "Design Mode". This allows you to design check boxes and other ActiveX features BUT does NOT permit you to use them. See your help file on "turning off design mode".
