Hi, Vincent,

The computing "environment" has values that are changeable, or "variable"
and can be set for certain needs of different software programs. The
physical location of temporary storage is one of those environment
variables. It's identified by TEMP or TMP in the environment variables
settings.

Software applications use this location to create files "on the fly" that
are used while you are working in the application. Sometimes this physical
location gets too large and the computer can no longer use the folder
effectively. This may be what's happening.

Here's how to view and change those environment variables:

Right-click on My Computer and select Properties.
Select the Advanced tab.
Select the Environment Variables button.
Check the location of TEMP and TMP (probably c:\temp, or c:\windows\temp, or
something).
Make sure the setting exists, first of all, then check that there is such a
location on your hard drive. Then, perhaps cleaning out the files will
clear up the issue.

Hope that helps--

There's a similar error with Word that is documented here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302629/en-us

Because a registry key could have gotten corrupted, have you tried
re-installing Office? Are you using Word as your e-mail editor in Outlook?
Can you pinpoint what activity you are doing when the error occurs--for
example when composing a new message?

Are you running the RTM software, trial software, or beta software?

This can be caused by the "Secure Browsing" function from the WDSync
program (supplied with Western Digital external hard disks) and maybe
other ways as well. Check the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software
\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders and look for
the Cache, Favourites, History and Cookies entries. The Cache entry is
the specific one that causes this problem - point it back to the
default for your profile. If the value here looks OK then copy it from
the registry key and paste it into the Start/Run box and press Enter
to check if it exists. If it exists an explorer window will open in
the folder - check the permissions and make sure you can create and
delete a file from it.

Good luck.

Rich.

I had the same problem and none of the scores of solutions alread
easily visible online were of any use. The same issue occurred usin
Office 2003 and Office 2007.

I eventually solved it by correcting the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software
\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\*User *Shell Folders\Cach
registry key (I just pointed it to %USERPROFILE%\Loca
Settings\Temporary Internet Files).

This key was pointing to an old hard drive partition I removed man
years ago. For some reason (recent security patch?) this key recentl
started taking precedence over the other registry entries an
environment variables that have been mentioned in other potentia
solutions to this problem

If you do not know the registry then do not touch it. You might create serious problems.

Start a new thread with your issue explaining exactly what is happening and posting the exact error message that is shown. Include the version and year of your Office along with your OS

I have had the same problem with "Word could not create the work file
check the temp environment variable." I am using MS Office 2007 with
Windows Vista Home Premium on my HP Pavilion laptop. I get a similar
error when I try to run MS Excel or MS Outlook. I am also unable to save
any files. The problem does not exist if I have a jump drive connected
to my computer when I try to run any of the Microsoft Office programs.

I made the changes to my
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders\Cache registry key to
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files as suggested. It
was pointing to my jump drive for some unknown reason. Everything seems
to work OK now.

Thanks to luckyrat

Rich,

Thanks for the reference to the WD Secure Browse function. I rename
my computer to clear up some confusion in my home network and had t
reinstall the WD software. I remember playing around with the secur
browsing stuff but was not aware that it would hose me so badly.

My iPod even has debris on it as it takes on the drive letter that m
WD drive does when I use it. Now to fix that issue!

In addition I've been missing my Favorites for the same reason. The
just disappeared all together. This fixed it.

Gents,

The last few days I have had a similar problem with my Outlook
[following the purchase of new laptop and importing .pst files]. Thanks
for tips and cured, as suggested with changes to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre
ntVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\Cache\
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

It was actually pointing to G:WD sync and was probably a hangover from
me using WD Passport to back up old laptop.

Hi

I have had the same propblem. I have windows vista and have just got
new laptop. I open a word doc and this message comes up 'Word could no
create the work file. check the temp environment variable'

I also have a Western Digital external hard disk. So I think this mayb
one of the things that are caursing the problem.

The only problem is that I am no good with computers. In order for m
to fix it what would the first step.

(e-mail address removed) has suggested to Check the registry ke
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software
\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders and look for
the Cache, Favourites, History and Cookies entries.

but I do not know how to do that...

Other suggestions say to d
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr
ntVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\Cache\
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
