cidaemon.exe at 99% but with no HDD activity.

I have ON 07 and WDS 3.0 betas running.

I know that cidaemon.exe is part of the indexing service. But, if it is
busy indexing the files on my hard drive shouldn't I see some HDD
activity? I know it is at a low priority and doesn't really slow down my
computer but the darn process just keeps my CPU maxed out for no apparent
reason. If I end the process it goes to 0% for a while but doesn't go
away. A few minutes later it goes to 99% again.

This is gonna kill my battery life and probably wear out my CPU sooner
due to being hot all the time.

Oddly, I didn't have this problem the first time I installed WDS. I had
decided to give up on ON 07 till the refresh but changed my mind and
reinstalled them both. I had actually had to uninstall and reinstall WDS
dozens of times before till I figured out what was causing it to not work
before. So now I don't get why just one more install is causing this
problem.

Hi Grant,

Rather weird. I don't get why the process is running at all. I looked at
the file in my system32 folder and its version is 5.1.2600.0 with a size
of 8 KB. The description says "Indexing Service filter daemon". What's
so weird about this is that on none of my two computers where WDS 3 is
installed and running is the process ever loaded. No matter whether ON
or Outlook are open or not, that process just isn't there.
Can you take a look at the following regkey:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services. Search through this entire key
for the value "cidaemon". Does it find any entry?

What happens when you turn everything else off using ms config?

In my limited experience, processes suddenly running at elevated cpu
levels for prolonged periods is the result of some software interaction.

Thanks for taking a personal interest. the cidaemon is not found anywehre
in the key you specified. It is, however, found in HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache.

When I installed WDS, both in the past and just today, it said it had to
update cidaemon.exe and asked me to close it or just let the installer
replace it on reboot. I have done it both ways both in the past and just
today and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Maybe it isn't running on your machine because all of your files are
indexed already. Maybe I have something set differently. I'm gonna let it
run all night and see what happens.

That key wouldn't load it at startup or automatically. I guess some
other program must be loading it

That's weird. The WDS3 download doesn't include the file at all.

My files are definitely not all indexed. I am receiving the public MS
newsgroups via an NNTP add-in in Outlook 2007. That's around 500-1000
new messages a day that need to be indexed...

Did you have any previous WDS version installed? What happens when you
go in Computer Management (right-click on my computer, manage), and
expand "Services and Applications"? Do you get an MMC error message?

So, I rebooted my computer and went straight to task manager and then let
it sit. After about 7 minutes the cidaemon.exe started up and topped out
the CPU.

That's weird. The WDS3 download doesn't include the file at all.

Maybe the install pulls it out of one of the .CAB files or something.
Speaking of which. Maybe I should just run Microsoft Update. Just for
good measure.

Holy Cow!

Did you have any previous WDS version installed?

I had installed the WDS 2.something temporarilly when I was
troubleshooting why ON 07 wouldn't recognize the WDS install. Perhaps I
could uninstall WDS 3.0 beta, install that older version then install the
new 3.0 beta on top of that.

Yep. I guess that is a "feature" of the WDS 3.0 beta.

I think cideamon is part of the old windows indexing service...
Holy Cow!
Try keeping up with reading them...

Maybe installing wds 2, removing it and then installing wds 3 (with
reboots inbetween) might help?

Yes. It removed the Indexing services Snap-in and that's the error
message you get.

I did the above and now the problem is gone. Apparently, the WDS 3.0 beta
install doesn't remove the cidaemon.exe properly but the WDS 2.something
version does. I just installed 3.0 beta right on top of 2.something then
rebooted.

Thanks for trying to help.

I spoke too soon. It just took longer to show up.

Got some good news (maybe).

I, too, was getting 100% pegged CPU after launching ON2007. So, I used Task
Mgr to locate the ON processes. Found two of them: OneNoteM.exe and
OneNote.exe. Able to shutdown OneNoteM.exe, but couldn't shut down
OneNote.exe. Used MSCOnfig to stope OneNote.exe from being launched at
startup.

Now, I can still launch ON2007, and CPU still gets high when ON2007 is
running. But when I close ON2007, CPU usage drops back to normal levels.

So now, I can use my tablet PC again without it overheating and wearing out
the batteries real fast!

P

Does it automatically go to 100% when you launch ON? Do you have WDS3
installed? Are the notebooks online or offline?
Btw, why did ON launch at startup in the first place? It shouldn't.

Thanks for everyone's help on this. I was having so many roblems with
this darn thing that I just gave up and reapplied the image I took just
before I installed ON 2007 in the first place. I installed ON 07 beta,
then WDS 3.0 beta, and everything is working fine. Now the tasks that top
out the CPU are searchfilterhost.exe, searchindexerhost.exe, and
searchprotocolhost.exe. They each run up to almost 30% and there is
plenty of HDD activity telling me that they are really indexing my files.
They also only start using up cpu time when I haven't been using my
computer for a while, just as they should. I can search imported
documents and even text in pictures as advertised so I know it is
working.

Hurray!

Welcome to the beautiful world of Windows trying to protect you from
yourself (I hate that feature 90% of the time!)
It's actually possible to disable it...

Hi Grant,

I am glad it's finally working for you. When it's done indexing, you
should give search another try. Specifically, search for a term you know
that appears multiple times on one page. When you are on that page, use
the little arrows in the yellow bar to see if it gets you to the next
occurrence on the page.
Maybe this is working for you now as well?

Yes, even the next item arrows are working now. However you have to wait
till it is finished searching before they work reliably. Sometimes it can
still take a minute or two to finish searching. Ysually it is pretty
quick though. And, yes, I have let it index with OneNote 2007 open all
night. Over 24 hours in fact. The Indexing options control panel applet
says it has finished indexing.
