close, restore, minimize buttons missing on Word 2007

P

PaulH

I have MS Office 2007 Pro installed on Windows XP SP2. On MS Word 2007
(none of the other office applications have this problem) The close,
restore, minimize buttons that are normally present at the top-right
corner of the screen are missing.

Another very strange (and probably related) thing is that above the
normal office 2007 system menu (with the office logo, floppy disk,
undo, and redo icons in the top left corner) is what looks like a
"normal" system menu (with the word icon in the top left corner and
the document title just next to it). Just like in a "normal" windows
application, I can double click the document title to restore/
maximize.

Is there somewhere I can upload a screenshot of this? That would
probably make things clearer.

I've run through the "Microsoft Office Diagnostics" package and had no
problems.

Thanks,
PaulH

Google said I could upload to a picasa account. So, here's a
screenshot of my problem:

Exit Word, hold Ctrl and start Word again. Continue holding Ctrl until you
are prompted to start in Safe Mode. Do your Control Menu buttons (minimize,
restore, close) display?

Yes, in safe-mode everything works well.
I don't seem to be able to start in safe-mode when I open Word by
double-clicking a document, though. I can only do it when directly
opening Word through the start menu.

Thanks,
PaulH

Since it displays correctly in Safe Mode then that suggests you have an
add-in causing the behavior. Start Word regularly, click the Office Button,
click Word Options, and in the Add-ins section try disabling the active
add-ins one at a time and see if you can find which one is causing the
issue. Use the Manage command at the bottom to disable them. Note that this
method won't permanently disable each type of add-in so let us know what you
find and we'll go from there.

I only have one add-in that I could disable, "Microsoft Live Meeting".
It did not matter if that was enabled or disabled.

While testing the add-ins, I did discover something else. I have a
dual-monitor configuration (something I didn't think was relevant to
mention before.) This issue only happens when Word is started
_maximized_ in the right (secondary) monitor. Safe-mode always starts
in the left (primary) monitor.

I also notice that if I switch to the "Windows Classic" theme, I do
not have this issue.

Since this may be relevant, this is what I'm using for my dual monitor
setup:
monitors: Dell UltraSharp 1800FP
resolution: 1280x1024-32 bit
video card: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200
driver: 6.14.11.6218 6/29/2007
nView Desktop Manager: 120.02

I'm glad you found the underlying cause but unfortunately I don't have any
ideas for you other than to make sure your graphics driver for your
secondary monitor is updated. :-(

Hopefully someone has an idea for you or perhaps ask in a Windows newsgroup
about your display issue on the secondary monitor.

I just updated to the latest nvidia drivers, but it doesn't seem to
help.
I'll poke around some more.

Thanks for your help!

I had the same problem. This seems to work for me. In nView Deskto
Manager in the Windows tab try the following settings.

Prevent windows from opening off-screen *uncheck *
Enable window spanning across multiple displays *check*
Enable child window spanning across muliple displays - *uncheck*
Default display
No window snapping
No repositioning

This also fixed a problem I had with maximized windows on one of m
screens (the screens are two different sizes)

nView is an application for NVIDIA based video cards that handles
display properties (resolution, dual monitors, etc). Unfortunately, I
do not have a machine handy with an NVIDIA card installed so that I can
specifically verify how to open nView.

But from memory and guessing, try ONE of the following......
Check the system tray for the nView icon, or it may come up as
"Nvidia" (its a green icon like the NVIDIA logo).
Right-click on desktop, check the menu for Nvidia or nView, or go to
'properties'. There may be an entry on the Display properties tab for
it.
Check Start -> All Programs and look for an NVIDIA or nView entry.
Lastly, download and install the latest NVIDIA display drivers.
nView usually installs with it.

Of course this only applies if you have an NVIDIA card. If you don't,
then I'm not sure what to check next.
