compacting db when exiting (closing)

Can someone tell me how I can go about the following:

I have a button that closes the database, and I would like to have the
button compact the database and close the database.

i tried to create a "compact database" macro, but it errors saying can't
compact the db because it is open.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated,
