Compatibility between Excel 2003 and 2008 (Windows & Mac)

My company uses both Macs and PCs and there is a need to use Shared
Workbooks. We have come across a few issues with doing so: Data loss (2008 &
2003), unable to save over existing file(2008), and out of memory (2008).
The issue does not always occur, but occurs more often than not. The most
prevalent issue is not being able to save over the existing file. I have
instructed my users to Save As, and then rename the file as a workaround. I
have not been able to provide any support to them for data loss or for the
memory issue. Many times they will lose multiple hours worth of work when
the data loss occurs. When the memory error occurs, work cannot be
completed, as Excel will crash and close. We currently have SP3 for our 2003
version and some machines have SP1 on the Macs (installed only to see if it
would resolve the issues, it didn't)

MS Advanced Support said they would have to charge me 2 x $259 because my
issue contains both Office 2003 and 2008.

Does anybody know of any possible solutions, or is this a known issue
between 2003 and 2008? Any input is very much appreciated.

AKhatri -

I suggest you post in the microsoft.public.mac.office.excel newsgroup.

There is much activity there about Mac Excel 2008, and several software
engineers from Microsoft's Mac Business Unit answer questions there
regularly.

Before you post, you could use the Advanced Groups Search at
groups.google.com to search for relevant past postings.
