compatibility problem opening word 2002 table in office 97

Ellen

I have a document with a table created in word 2002. When
you open this document in word 97, there are issues with
the table. Instead of being a 4 page table, it comes up
with 1 page with the table starting at the top edge of the
paper and going off the bottom edge, rest of table cannot
be seen. When you click on the table, there's an anchor
in the upper-left hand corner of the first cell and a
border appears around the table (looks like the border is
made up of slashes)which seems to be a frame. If you
right click on it you get the format frame option. You
can then select the remove frame option and it looks
correct. I cannot find any indication in word 2002 that
there is a frame around this table. Is there some way in
word 2002 to prevent this from happening or fix it before
opening it in word 97? In 2002 there is no indication
that there is a frame around this table and I'm unable to
get to the format frame option by right clicking on it.
If I go to format, frames there is no indication that
there is a frame present. If I click on the no frame
button, when I open it in word I get this message: This
page uses frames, but your browser doesn't support them.

Is there any documentation for Office XP (2002)features to
avoid if the documents will be opened in Office 97?

Hi Ellen,

I could be wrong here as I am working from memory... I do not have access to
Word 97 at the moment...

If I remember correctly, Word 97 did not allow text wrapped around a table,
unless you put it in a text box or a frame.

So, if that is the case, my guess is that your 2002 table is set to having
text wrapped around it instead of inline (i.e. no wrapping in the Table
property dialog, Table tab). When 97 opens, it cannot do that, so it inserts
the table in a frame.
You have to be careful with table when downgrading, lots of features are
available to Word 2002 but were not for 97. If you know that your
2002-produced table may be viewed with 97, then use only the very simple
basic formatting features and test the output with 97 before
distributing/sending your document..

Cheers!
