Computer crashes with Publisher

L

Linda K

I need some information as why my computer crashes when I use Microsoft
Publisher 2002. I have Windows 98, 128 ram. I collect a lot of clipart from
the internet and save it in a word document for further use. This is a
continious problem and would like some knowledge if it is a computer hardware
or shoftware problem and how to fix it. How can I find out if everything I
have is compatible.

J

JoAnn Paules

That 128 is a BARE minimum. Bump it up.

And why do you save your clip art in a Word doc?

L

Linda K

I look for educational graphics on the internet and do not know how to save
them in the clipart file. When I save them in MY Pictures, the pictures do
not show up, on ly icons. I have no way to view them without opening all of
them. So, I open a word document and same them there and clip and past to
the publisher document. I know this isn't the correct way, but the only way
I know how to use them.

How much ram do you recommend and do you recommend updateing to Windows XP.
My computer says my resorces are very low and consistently get "error must
shut down", "not enough memory", it locks up or crashes. I can't even
defrag without it locking up. My problems seem to begin after opening
Publisher and it is getting worse.

M

Mary Sauer

As stated before, you are in need of a video driver. Open Publisher in safe mode, if
it works okay then you will know the driver is outdated.
There are many good viewers you can download to view your images, www.irfanview.com
is free and excellent. It comes with plug-ins for various formats, download the
plug-ins too.

You will be better off defragging in safe mode. In Windows 98 I found it is the only
way to go.

If you have had success running your computer in the past, then doing some clean-up,
updating the drivers and running spyware maybe all you need.

Empty your Internet cache, in IE, tools, Internet Options, delete files.

Read the support documents in the above post.

System requirements for Windows XP operating systems

I have already ran Spy Sweeper, emptyed Internet cache and deleted graphic
files. When trying to open a publisher document, a screen comes up and tells
me Publisher incountered a problem last time and do I want to open in the
Safe Mode. I say yes and it crashes. When I try to defrag, it freezes up at
10% complete everytime, then it crashes. Our tech department also cleaned it
up yesterday. Today I have more of the same problems. I ran PC Doctor and
it said all my tests passed.

Could it be that I do not have enough ram? Would installing Windows XP help?

I have an IBM 633 mhz Celeron, with Win 98 SE, 127 MB, System Resources 43%,
User Resources 52% and Office 2002. Do I need a more powerful computer
period?

J

JoAnn Paules

I just put XP Pro on my mom's system. She has a 433 Celeron with 196 MB RAM.
It will run on yours.

I'm curious what the dickens you have running in the background that's
sucking up all of your resources. What all is in your System tray? Is this
your work system or home?

D

DavidF

JoAnn, Please explain to me why after you just got through telling her that
she has barely enough RAM to run Pub 2002 on Win98, why would you suggest
that she has enough RAM for XP. It may run, but certainly not well. It seems
to me that spending money on upgrading to XP and adding RAM would be better
spent on a new computer...IF that was a last resort.

I also don't understand why aren't you supporting Mary Sauer's suggested
steps at resolving the issues including the recommendation to reinstall or
update the video driver instead of going out and spending money and probably
not fixing her problem. What does the fact that the computer went into safe
mode when it crashed tell you? And if that doesn't fix the problem, aren't
there a lot of other things to check such as patches, printer drivers, NAV,
etc. etc. before suggesting or supporting wasting her money?

The OP asked about upgrading to XP. All I did was say that my mom is running
XP Pro on a Celeron with 196. In her case, her hard disk started to fail and
I had an extra one that wasn't being used. I also had an unused copy of XP.
I could have reloaded 98 but I know that more and more software requires XP.
She doesn't do anything more than surf the net, play Solitaire, and make a
few greeting cards.

Would I dump a lot of money in a 633 Celeron? Nope. I'm running a P3-550
with XP Pro with 384. I have all of the programs I need for now. I have
Office 2000, Office 2003, and Photoshop Elements. I also have a few simpler
games so I'm really set for a while. I don't even like to buy software for
this system. Seems kind of ridiculous knowing that it's about as maxed out
as it's going to get reasonable. Unless someone wanted to give me a better
graphics card, the case is NOT coming off of my system again.

Mary's suggested upgrading the video driver twice. (If I had to venture a
guess, the OP has integrated graphics - yuck!) I suggested a little more
RAM - she could find another 128 for a decent price and I'll stand my ground
that it certainly won't hurt her system.

I work for a school board and use all the office programs. My worse problems
began after I started using Publisher on a regular basis. I design brochures
and newsletters. Also, I research the Web for material that I can use in
relation to our programs and clipart that best represents my topic. Since I
have installed 2002, I have a problem getting my clipart from my own computer
program, so I must seek other options. I tried to solve that problem in your
newsgroup but was didn't happen. Cleaning out the computer was not the
answer. Microsoft Corp must address this problem for a better resolution.

I am working on and have many windows open and minimized at one time. Our
school system logo takes up lots of space, expecially when it is on all my
publishing documents saved on my computer. If I need a better multitasked
machine, then I need to know what to ask for. My job requirements will
justify a more powerful computer if that will fix the problem. I need to
know what to ask for, if that is the solution. I don't need to request
another computer if that won't fix the problem. Other employees doing
similiar duties, do not have these same problems and my computer appears to
be stable based on the diagnostics. I did not mention that I am also on a
server, networked with the system. Would that be a factor?

Eww. I see a couple of things that could be an issue.

(1) 128MB RAM just isn't enough - especially for a multitasker. (Have you
ever noticed that women are more likely to do that then men?)

(2) Networked systems tend to suck up resources with ...... well, crap.
(Sorry, I tried finding another word but that one really fits.) My husband
has a similar problem at work - his network runs 58 processes before he does
anything. Your low resource level is indicative of this same situation.

(3) Publisher doesn't like networks. Are you running it locally or is it on
the server?

M

Mary Sauer

Linda,
All the support documents suggested will help. Put your computer into safe mode and
open Publisher, when your computer is in safe mode the drivers do not load. If
Publisher runs okay, then update the video driver. If the video driver is integrated
you can upgrade that too. If you have an IT person helping you, ask him/her.
Read this Knowledge Base article:
How to troubleshoot video problems in Publisher 2002
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;323786
It has network information.
This is not a MIcrosoft issue, this is an issue you can solve by reading the articles
suggested.
