Use the Text Block Tool. This is found on the standard toolbar, but it's
not readily visible. Select the dropdown on the Text Tool (A) and the Text
Block Tool will be underneath it in the selection list. Pick the connector
text with this tool and you will get grips that allow you to move and resize
it. At least, that's how it is in 2003-- I can't remember if 2000 was
different.
