consolidated projects

How do I remove an 'inserted project' from a 'consolidated project' without
deleting it from MS Project? I want to simplify the consolidated project when
an inserted project is completed but keep a record of it elseware.

Pete,
First of all if you are using Project 2003 make sure you have the SP1
update. There was a bug that didn't allow inserted projects to be
deleted properly.

There are various ways to remove an inserted project from a master and
as long as it is a dynamic master, (i.e. subproject dynamically linked
to the master - this is the default), the removed subproject will not be
"deleted". As a matter of fact, subprojects in a dynamic master are not
part of the master at all, the master simply contains a pointer to the
actual separate subproject file. All you will be doing is deleting the
pointer (link).

Although as I mentioned there are various ways, I think this is the best
method.

1. In the master select the insertion point of the desired subproject
2. Go to Project/Task Information/Advanced tab
3. Uncheck the "Link to project" box
4. Hit "OK"
5. Finally with the Summary Line insertion point still selected, go to
Edit/Delete Task. That will remove the entire block of tasks associated
with that subproject.
6. Finally, do a Save and hit the "Save all" button when the save
message pops up.

Hope this helps.

Thanks John,
Loading SP1 was the solution. Before that I couldn't uncheck the 'Link to
project' box

Pete,
You're welcome. I'm glad it was so simple.

John,
I am using Project 2003 Standard - have created a Master Project and linked
the files but they were inserted as read-only since this will be used as tool
for management to view open projects.

I want to be able to remove a project in the master project once it is
completed. I clicked on the task, went into Advanced, unchecked the LINK box
and then requested to DELETE TASK. I then choose to continue and delete. Then
I get a message that says "The selected item has some actual values. Do you
still want to delete it?" I choose Yes but it is still listed in the master
project.

Any help would be appreciated!!!
Thanks,
LeAnn

LeAnn,
There was an issue with being able to unlink subprojects from a master
and that issue was resolved with an update. If you don't already have
SP2 installed for Project 2003, install it. That should solve your
problem.

Nonetheless, I'm a little confused by the process you describe for
unlinking. When you say you clicked on the task, I assume you mean you
selected the subproject insertion point which is a summary line in the
master that points to the subproject. If you then go to Project/Task
Information/Advanced tab you will indeed see an option showing a "link
to project". Unchecking this option and hitting OK should get a message
asking if you want to save changes to the subproject. So where does the
"delete task" message appear?

After I unchecked the link box, I highlighted the line w/ the sub project in
it, right clicked and selected delete task. I don't think I was saving back
to the original file so that may be where the problem was stemming from.
Thanks,
Frances

Frances,
I assume that after you unchecked the "link to project" box, you then
hit OK to get out of the Task Information window. At that point the
previous dynamically inserted subproject becomes an actual part of the
master file (previously the subproject was NOT part of the master). Then
if you delete the top summary line of that previously inserted
subproject, Project will in fact remove all of its subtasks from the
master.

At any rate may I assume that you resolved your problem? If so, great.
If not, tell me more.

John
