Continuous Sec Break

Aurora

I am using Word 2000
I have a document with a large header that extends almost
to each side of the paper.

For the text following the header I want to have the
normal margins of 1" on each side. I put in a Section
Break for Continuous but it acts like a page break and
will not allow me to add text right underneith the break
line. It pushes everthing to the next page. What am I
doing wrong?

I recreated what you described and it worked for me. I put
the continuous break at the end of the heading. Once I was
underneath the heading, I went to page layout, apply to
this section and set the margins like you described.

This is not the way to accomplish what you want. Don't change the page
margins (which are meant to be a page property); just give the header
paragraph(s) a negative left and right indent.

Thank you for answering my question. What you suggested
is what I thought I tried to do, but it did not work. I
will try again today.

Thank you for answering my question.
I do not understand exactly what you are saying. I do not
understand "negative indents". Can you explain this a
little bit more?

If this is a header - what's the section break for? Put the header in the
header view and if it is only to appear on the first page, setup a different
first page header in the page setup dialog. There doesn't seem to be a need
for a section break.

A negative indent is an indent with a setting of less than 0 eg -.5"

Check under Format, Paragraph, Line & Page Breaks. Is
Page Break Before checked? This sounds like this may be
your problem.

Thank you for answering, but I check as you suggested but
that box was not checked.

In fact I copied the header on to a new page. Was able to
add a continuous page break and re-set my margins the way
I wanted them. Then I went back to the original document
and copied the first page of text and it went right on the
1st page when it belonged. Then I went back to the
original document and copied the balance of the text,
added to my new copy and all of the text (including the
first page of text) fell to the second page. So I deleted
the 2nd portion of the text that I copied and everything
else went back up to the first page like it should have
been. So I then decided to type out the additional text.
When I got down to the bottom of the 1st page, again
everything but the header fell down to the second page.

Does this give you any ideas? I hate using what someone
else has developed (the header), but I have to. In the
beginning, I re-created the header and had no problem with
the text but was told I had to use the original header.

Thank you for answering. I again tried what you said, but
it still did not work.

The header has a margin of .5" from both sides. I want
the text to have a margin of 1" on sides. That is why I
need the section break to change the margins.

You don't need a section break to do this. Set negative left and right
indents for the header paragraph ie -5" or use a borderless frame that
overlaps the margins to contain the header information.

Oops. That should read -.5"

Can we clarify whether we're talking about headers or headings? Are you
putting text in the header pane (View | Header and Footer)?
