Convert Headings to text keeping formatting

How can I convert headings to text but keep the formatting?
This is so that when I append this document at the end of the first document
and redo the table of contents etc, it will not show up in the first
document's TOC. [I would freeze the TOC of the last document with
Ctrl-shift-f9]. Is there a command or can someone help me with a piece of VBA
code.

TIA.

Hi Stefan,
Your suggestion would help somewhat. My reason is to have available "final"
documents to insert into a main document without Headings etc changing other
related stuff. Can you tell me how to convert headings to plain text and then
apply the formatting so they look like headings? TIA - xs400

What I would do is to create a second set of styles with the same formatting as
the Heading styles currently in the document. The one important difference:
Format/Paragraph/Indents and Spacing: Set "Outline level" to Body text.

(Most automatically generated TOCs look for both the Heading style as well as
the outline level. Very few people even know that, or know where to turn it
off.)

Once you have created the style, you can use either Find/Replace to exchange the
styles in the document. Or you can use the Styles and Formatting task pane to
"Select all instances" of a Heading style, then click on the corresponding
substitute style to apply it instead.
