Use Adobe Acrobat. (I know there are some lower cost options out there but I
use the real thing.)

You can save your file as a .gif, can't you?

For PDF you can use e.g. my PStill application, print from Publisher
to a PostScript queue and get a PDF, works also with placed EPS as
PStill does full PostScript processing. Demo here:

You wouldn't want to waste your time and effort downloading and installing
PStill - a mega dog of a product in more ways than one.
QABOT will not even look at the results of a PStill file.

Actually, it is a pity it is such a dog, as the features the program has are
great. The PDF creation is lousy, and the CMYK is an unmitigated disaster
looking for somewhere to happen.

I am very sorry that seemingly you experienced problems using PStill.
If you could articulate your critic in detail in a email to me you
could help me improve the application.

However I consider your current response a bit unfair, as it does not
give me any room for defense, been named 'a dog' can only lead to the
response 'I am no dog', don't you think? All I can say in my defense
that several of my users of PStill does run it in connection with MS
Publisher and are quite happy with the results. Since it is in its
core a PostScript/EPS to PDF converter the setup of the printer driver
is of importance to get good results.

As far as I know PStill produces fully complient PDF or PDF/X, also I
have no reports that QABOT does not cope with PDF generated by PStill.
If you have any troubling issues please send me the files that were
used as input to the converter and I am happy to look them over or
help you with the setup of the program.

Likewise PStill can definitely handle CMYK, you should create your
source job in CMYK for best results otherwise the default PS color
conversion (using the PS UCR/BG functions) is in effect.

Frank,

I used it a few years ago and found it to be "okay." No offense, but I
found Jaws better. But I was intrigued with the ability to output PDF/X
so I downloaded the demo and installed it. I tried printing a page with
color pictures on it, but it kept crashing. Used the MS Imagesetter to
create the ps file - is there a better one to try?

No offense taken. ;)

You can try the printer setup as described in the documentation, that
is PStill_Guide.pdf, page 16. Also RIPs like the "Xerox DocuColor40
w/Cyclone RIP" type as printer setting should work, using the plain
Windows NT, 2000 or XP PS printer driver. Be sure to use the current
public version that is 1.70 at the moment. Don't be surprised by the
low version number change, there is a full year development and
improvements between 1.6 and 1.7, etc. I just don't subscribe to
version number inflation.

If the job produces a conversion error check out if the PS setting is
setup'ed to support PS Level 2 (you may have old settings in place if
you ever tried an old PStill version on the same machine), this is the
same dialog as you setup the PDF/X settings.

If you have a source job that still causes troubles or even "crashes"
the program I really would like to see it.

thanks & regards

I'm still running Win 98. Is that a cause.?

It never gets that far - at about 35-40 percent, the program stops and I
have to shut it down via Program Manager.

I'll wait until after seeing your replies. I also have some black and
white printers with drivers I can try, but the Imagesetter and Publish
Color printer are the only ones with color.

The recommended OS is now XP or 2000. because the PS printer driver
there are better. PStill is develop'ed on XP, however tested also on
Win98. The default MS PS printer driver on Win98 does not create the
best PostScript output, so PStill might revert to convert text to
outlines in some cases to maintain visual correctness. There are
alternatives however... (See the Pstill_Guide.pdf, page 16)

Please send me the PS job (make it a ZIP file) and I'll take a look.

Try the 'Canon PS-IPU LaserCopier" PS printer driver setup for Win98,
it produces full color, incl. larger formats and is very compatible
with most PostScript output devices.

Frank I have no need to use PStill anymore as after it failed to perform to
standard, I moved on and found software that did.

Frank I have no need to use PStill anymore as after it failed to perform to
standard, I moved on and found software that did.

I am glad you did. Still I would have liked some deeper explanation of
the rant in your postings before. I consider PStill a usable product
(otherwise I would not stand behind it 100%) and according to all my
QA, tests and user feedback it really does 'perform to standard'. If
you can show me otherwise, I always have an open mailbox for trouble
reports and a years long history of fixing issues and helping my users
within short time. So please excuse me for being a little pressing on
the topic.
