Converting to PDF

G

gailrolfe

I have just downloaded PrimoPDF and saved my Publisher booklet to it.
However, when it opens in Adobe, it is sideways and I"m not sure what to do.
The booklet in Publisher was 4.5" by 5.5" and looked perfect in Publisher.
Help? Thanks, Gail

I am amending my question because I did just find the "rotate view" but then
I found that I cannot read the booklet in normal order as I could in
Publisher; the pages seem to be set up in the way they would print rather
than in readable form. Is that because I clicked "Print" at the beginning of
the converter? If so, which way should I send it to the printer? Thanks,
Gail

It is indeed because of that. PDF conversion works just like printing;
PrimoPDF looks just like a printer to Publisher.

Save your publication
File > Page Setup > Printer and Paper
Select PrimoPDF from the Printers drop-down
Set the paper size to be 4.5" x 5.5" (or whatever the size of each
individual page of your booklet is)
Go back to the Layout tab
Make sure Full Page is selected
OK
Print to PDF
Save as a new file, as this will no longer print correctly on your regular
printer.

Ed, I did all of that except that on layout I left it as "booklet" because
that was how I'd set it up in Publisher....should I change that for the PDF
if I want it to print as a booklet? Or is doing the "full page" just to set
up a version that I can read? Thanks for the clarification. Gail

You HAVE to change it to Full Page to make each page print to the PDF file
separately; that's the whole purpose of the exercise. You keep a separate
file that has the page set up as a booklet; then run through this procedure
to separate the pages to get a PDF that isn't in the booklet-printing-ready
format.

Doesn't anyone use the built-in pdf writer?

I converted a newsletter last week but noticed after it was uploaded that
there were some conversion errors so I went back to my pub file to fix it and
then reconvert. However now I cannot convert. I get an "Activation error"
message: "Printer not activated, error code 30." Anyone know what the problem
is? (I don't have the help file.)

Not everyone is using the beta software. And since MS is not going to have
the save to .pdf feature built in to the final product (unless Hell freezes
over and Adobe says they can), why get used to it?

JoAnn,

Are you saying the new version of Pub will not be able to create a pdf
of a file?

I'm saying that the last I heard is that Microsoft cannot use the save as
..pdf function because Adobe says no. Things could change but I wouldn't
count on it. There's been some talk about having some sort of a free
download but I don't know whether that will be a "Save As" or a Print type
command.

I would guess it would be some kind of registry patch or keyfile that
enabled the type of functionality seen in the Beta. A print-type command
would require extra work to design and is as yet untested.

JoAnn, my "final product" does print to pdf - and I've done it - but all of a
sudden it doesn't work (see error message below). Do you know what the
problem is?

I've tried dowloading primopdf but it is too slow, even w/ cable modem. The
last attempt timed out at 14% after an hour. How long does it take?

Primo was a 10MB file. (That was the old version, not sure about the new.)
It shouldn't take you all that long with cable.

Have you tried printing from the Acrobat program rather than from Publisher?
Have you upgraded Acrobat?

Mary, I don't have Acrobat - if I did I would not be asking about converting
from .pub to .pdf. And I don't even want to print - I want to convert a .pub
document to a pdf. I have Publisher 98 and last week I was able to convert to
pdf. All of a sudden I get this printer activation (error code 30) message.

What I really want to know is if anyone can help troubleshoot this problem.

Send me the file, I will convert it for you. Publisher 98 did not have a PDF
conversion feature. You must have (had) a third party application.
