Correcting text in a simple word document

I can't seem to go back and correct text without all of the text that comes afterward also getting messed up. I just want to delete the old spelling or word and replace it. It just eats into the following text instead of replacing what I delete. What am I doing wrong?

On Tools | Options, Edit tab, uncheck Overtype mode.
OR look at your Status Bar, on the far right it says OVR. Double click on
that to turn overtype mode on and off (black text on, grey text off).

In the status bar across the botton of the screen, look for 'OVR' (short for
overwrite) -- Press the Insert key to toggle this. You currently have it on,
and want it off.
