corrupt disk

saved series of file to a disk in trying to open said disk
it has an index to a series of files that are not
present. Can not access saved files on disk. Don't kow
why or how but any ideas how to 1. correct the problem
and 2. How to access the files.

If by "disk" you mean floppies and if by "save" you mean Word files and you saved then
directly from Word then chances are that the disk is toast.
Always save to your HD and copy to the disk and v/v (copy to the HD and open from there).
(This applies to any removable media.)

Index?? Maybe a Directory?? Series of files??? Multiple copies of same
files?? Perhaps this "disk" is a CD-RW, a floppy, a CD-R or something
else???? So a couple of sugestions.

1. Without knowing what you actually have, no one can safely help you
recover the info.
and

2. This is an issue with the operating system not "Office".

So to resolve the problem, determine the operating system you are using,
(R-click My Computer, Properties) and then post the problem and
appropriate info in one of the groups for your operating system Win98 or
WinME or Win2000 or WinXP.
