Corruption - Rebuilds hang

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel Email Client: pop I'm pulling my hair out. I paid $50 for tech support and no one could help. I have to have a fix or else I must trash (meaning stop using) Entourage 2008. I have it on a Powerbook and Desktop. The desktop tells me I must rebuild. Step 5 gets the end and just spins (not responding), so I must force quit. I have TimeMachine. I cannot get my Entourage to work!!! Is there nothing available? One of my POP3 accounts just gets errors and I have tried to delete and reinstall. I also killed the information in KeyChain related to this account.

If the Identity on your Powerbook is identical, you can simply replace it
with the one on your desktop.

When the rebuild fails at step 5 it's usually a lack of free drive space. I
keep a 500GB drive free for rebuilds for my clients.

Using Time Machine to backup Entourage basics:

It's advised by the developers not to let Time Machine backup your Entourage
database. If the database is copied while being used, the backup could be
corrupt. You can set the Time Machine to exclude the Microsoft User Data
folder and create an iCal event to copy it over at night while not in use so
you get one backup daily in Time Machine.

Just so you know, rebuild often doesn't work. Make sure you have a
good backup routine as you can always go to a backup before the
corruption loosing hopefully only minimal info. If rebuild doesn't
work and you can't revert to a backup the best thing is just to start
with a new user identity and export and import your info to that.

Diane, I have 385GB of open space on my internal HD. That isn't enough for a DB rebuild??? Please explain!!

Okay, now the next vital question: If the database IS corrupt (and I'm sure it is), I have had Time Machine create backups from day one on this "new" machine (two years ago it was purchased). Is there "nothing" in the Time Machine archives that will help me replace my database??

I have copied all the old email (via drag and drop). I have NOT copied my contacts as I have a hunch the problem lies within there. Each time I enter the Contacts I see weird things (not dead people :-D). Suggestions? And I'm really puzzled on how much space this program needs to rebuild given so much free space and it still hangs!!

Diane, also, the tiny url you provided on using the Time Machine to backup Entourage is not working.

Diane, also, the tiny url you provided on using the Time Machine to
backup Entourage is not working.

In my previous post I indicated frequently rebuild just doesn't work
and Microsoft is aware of this. I haven't had corruption in months
(thank goodness) but I used to get a fair bit when I was sync'g with
more than one sync module turned on at a time. What I would do as a
first step is go ta a backup before the corruption occurred. I used to
try Time Machine backups and they were successful. I no longer use
Time Machine but overnight backups with everything shut down due to
the issues with Entourage and Time Machine backups. But give it a go
as it sounds like you're in a tough spot.

If you've been sync'g with iCal and Addressbook all your info is there
too. If you use IMAP mail your info is all on the server and a new
identity can be built via that route.

Diane, you never replied and I'm confused about the space issue you cited. Also, my Contacts are definitely corrupt. Any way to just delete contacts and reinstall??

I just clicked on the URL Diane gave and it worked for me. Suggest you try
again, or if not, go to entourage.mvps.org and just search for Time Machine
backup.

I'm confused about the space issue you cited.

385GB free space is more than enough; don't sweat it.

It is possible the "hang" you are seeing is just a very long time to repair
things. How long have you let the rebuild go before aborting it? I'd suggest
letting it run overnight, and see if perhaps it will eventually complete.
