CPU goes to 100% when send and receive is clicked

I suddenly haqve a problem with Outlook 2002. After
opening Outlook and clicking "send/receive" the CPU goes
to 100% and everything slows to a crawl. After rebooting
everything clears up again untill I hit "send/recieve "
again, then it goes to 100% again. This happened several
months ago and I had to wipe the drive and start over to
get it right. I have updated and it still slows to a
crawl.
Any suggestions
