creating an index.

Is there an online write-up about creating and index for a book
manuscript that is in Word?

Is there a way to create separate author and topic indices?

Is there a way to have and index update if there are changes to the
manuscript like additions, corrections, deletions of text?

Does anyone have experience with creating indices in WordPerfect and
saving the result as a Word document? Or transferring the concordances?

Did you look in the Word Help system under index? You use a
concordance file (a list of word you want indexed) and the Help system
as a decent explanation for how to do it. As far as I know, to create
separate indexes, you would just create two concordance files and then
insert two indexes. What version of Word you're using would help as to
specific instructions.

If you're in Office 03 you should be able to do this pretty simply.
Create your document with your list of words to be indexed. Go to the
location you wish to place the index

1. On the Insert menu, point to Reference, click Index and Tables, and
then click the Index tab. Use AutoMark to browse to the location of
your concordance file.
2. Do one of the following:
a. Click a design in the Formats box to use one of the available
designs.
b. Design a custom index layout.
In the Formats box, click From template, and then click Modify.

In the Styles box, click the style you want to change, and then
click Modify.
To add the new style definition to your template (template: A
file or files that contain the structure and tools for shaping such
elements as the style and page layout of finished files. For example,
Word templates can shape a single document, and FrontPage templates can
shape an entire Web site.), select the Add to template check box.
c. Under Formatting, select the options you want, and then click
OK.
d. In the Style dialog box, click OK.

Once it's in, when you want to update it to reflect changes in either
the concordance or the document text, right-click and choose update
field

Have fun.

BTW you can also use manual markup but it's much easier to do the
concordance.
