Cusor position

open a new document and the cursor starts at the top of the page. How do I
get it to return to the norm. Page setup has a 1" margin from the top but it
stills opens with the cursor at the top of the page.

Tools > Options > View > check "White space between pages"

I had the same problem and your solution worked for me. Question is, why did
this change? I am quite sure I did not make this change when all of a sudden
it was doing this. Software can be so annoying sometimes despite all the
good things it does.

Probably you clicked in the right (wrong?) place -- see the third picture in
