customize pane in the "open" dialog box

I want to be able to choose from "recent documents" when I navigate through
the "open" dialog window. I know the left-hand pane can be customized in
Office 2007 (it's called "My Places"), but I only have XP.

Try this for Win XP, rather than Office.
