customize the "open" window

I use office 03 - on some programs (notably powerpoint) when using the Open
icon from the menu bar or from the "file" drop down list ... I get an open
window that opens to the Preview view .... and always opens "My Documents"
folder first...

How can I change this to a a default of the Details view and a folder other
than My Documents??
