mikenike,
Your post is a little confusing. You are talking about flagging a
resource name and changing colors of flags and a column with resource
names.

First, what do you mean by "flag a resource"? Second, flags don't have
colors unless you're talking about the little flags that can be used in
custom fields with graphical indicators. If that is what you are talking
about, how are you setting up the graphical indicators? Third, what view
and field are you referring to when you say, "column that is resource
names"? Fourth, viewing your picture requires a sign-in to the techarena
forum and I don't wish to do that, but maybe someone else does. However,
this forum discourages posting of attachments. It is better to more
thoroughly explain what you want rather than have us try to figure it
out.

hi Jan De Messemaeker thanks for the reply i had already done that and
that is what im not looking to do as i would have to have atleast 20
diferrent resource name columns as i have 20 different
resources........i have one resource name column (named "resource
name") all of my resources are in that one column via a dropdown method
of changing........now when i drop down a name to change i would like
the taskbar colour to automatically change......

Hi,

The suggestion remins valid but limited.
There are only 20 flag fields available.
But there aren't 20 different colors! This being said, if you do what's in
the faq, colors DO automatoically change when you change the resource. They
DO.

Hope this helps,

im still confused.....is there a value i have to set to tell msp when
change to one of the 20 names in "ONE RESOURCE COLUMN" it should chang
the colour

what is the value or formula i have to set to make this work......

when reading back you can see i have already done this by having 2
different resource columns and changing a drop down to yes/no whe
changing to yes the colour changes

this is not what i want to do i just want one column with all m
resources in that column and when changing a name the colou
changes.....

Hello mikenike,

Pardon me for bumping in but perhaps I can clarify things a bit. In
FAQ # 31 as Jan noted, you will need a Flag field for each of your
resources. For example, you have 4 resources: Bob, Carol, Ted, and
Alice. You will use the Flag1 field for Bob, the Flag2 field for
Carol, the Flag3 field for Ted, and the Flag4 field for Alice. In
*each* flag field you will need to use the formula noted in the FAQ :

For Flag1 (Bob's flag field):
IIf([Resource Names] = "Bob", Yes,No)

For Flag2 (Carol's flag field"
IIf([Resource Names]= "Carol", Yes, No)

For Flag3, use Ted's name in place of Carol, for Flag4 use Alice's
name.

You'll then need to create the custom bar styles for each resource as
noted in the FAQ.

You will still have the Resource Names column that you see in the
table on the Gantt chart which is the list of resources available in
your project. You can use that list to assign resources or change
resource assignments. If you pick Alice's name from the Resource
Names column, Flag3 will automatically change to "Yes" and the custom
bar using Flag3 will appear.

NOTE: This does *NOT* work if you have more than one resource
assigned to each task.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

mikenike,
I might as well chime in also. If what Jan suggested and Julie clarified
are not what you want, or if you have more than one resource assigned to
a task, your only option is VBA. Basically VBA could automate the
process of detecting when a resource assignment change is made and then
set the appropriate flag for the bar color.
