data1.msi is not on my CD

Sarah

I have Word (etc.) 2002.

Usually when I install an update, I'll be asked for
wordret.msi, which is on my installation CD. (It's CD#1
for Works Suite 2002.)

I am trying to install Office 2000 SP-1 (which the update
site says I need). It keeps asking me for data1.msi. I
don't have data1.msi. It's not on my CD and it's not on my
computer.

I have osp.msi, wordadd.msi, wkssync.msi, ospack.msi,
works6.msi, and wordret.msi. No data-anything.msi. No
Microsoft Small Business CDs (actually, I have some from
my old computer, but I doubt they'll work for this
version). My computer and CDs came from Dell.

What do I do?

I *am* using the Works CD. I have five Works Suite CDs. I tried all five of
them. *None of them* has anything called "data1.msi". There are a lot of
other *.msi files. (I apparently do have Microsoft Office Small Business 2000
on my computer - I don't know where it came from! - but everything else is
2002.)

I don't have any other CDs to check. The only Office 2000 CDs I have are
from my last computer. I *do* know how to search a CD, and I've done it
multiple times for every one I have.

The problem is not with my CDs. The problem is either that the installer is
asking for the wrong file for some reason or else Office Update is giving me
the wrong thing to install.

Hi Sarah,

Data1.msi is a common name for the master installation file
on every MS Office 2000 family product CD#1. If the copy
of Word it's looking for is Word 2000 then that could be
on a Works CD for that version (check in Add/Remove Programs
in the Windows Control Panel to see what '2000 series' products
are listed). When the installer asks for the CD it should have
a dialog box that says 'use feature from' and the name of the
product it's looking for.

Data1.msi won't be on any non-2000 series product.
You can choose the 2000 series product from Add/Remove programs
and choose the repair option from change and it will also tell
you (sometimes more clearly) which CD it's wanting.
