Dates do not calculate

D

DavidC

Hi,

Has anyone no what might be causing this intermitent fault. I have a
schedule with links to other schedule files, and I use the 'soft' links to
set dates for tasks which do not lend themselves to being summary tasks and I
need to create a specific report.

What I have noted is:

1 When I open the file, the soft links do not automatically refresh but go
to some other spurious dates which really screw up the report. I then have
to select all the soft links and update them. Yet I have selected the option
for these to be automatically updated rather than being asked to update links.

2 When I add a new task into the schedule and link it, it retains the date
used by default as the start date, but never refreshes when the link is
added, nor when recalculated. I then ahve to close the schedule and the
programme and reopen then it gives the correct date.

Any thoughts please

Hi David,

What is the process you are using to create soft links? I'm not familiar
with the term soft links - what version of Project are you using? If you're
using a server, try posting on the server newsgroup. Please see FAQ Item:
24. Project Newsgroups. FAQs, companion products and other useful Project
information can be seen at this web address:

Hi,

What I call 'soft links' are those which use the copy and paste special
function for the start and finish dates to create the equivalent of a hammock.

I am using Project 2003, but whilst we have the server version I refuse to
use it on the server since that seems to screw up a whole raft of settings
and does not seem to work for construction type projects with multitude of
contractors working different calendars. That is by the by though.

Our contractor is having exactly the same problem with addining in a task
and linking it but the start date not calculating to the start date
reflecting the finish date of the predecessor. there are no constraints or
resources etc involved. Our contractor programme is one of those I use in my
overall project schedule, but he uses Project 2000. I find it odd that we
have both had the same problem using different project versions on different
machines on different files (my problem showed itself on a separate
construction project).

Hi David,

Have you tried opening all the project files that contain the links? I,
personally, have not come across this before as I haven't linked in this way
before. I like to open a master file and insert the projects and then link
directly between them as if they were in the same project. Have you updated
to SP3?

Thanks for your response,

Yes have treid all of those options. It is strange since I have operated
this project with these files for over a year now, and since shutting the
programme down and reopening I have not yet (touch wood) had the problem.

I have also noticed that the programme only has SP2, so thanks for the heads
up, I will try and get it installed.
