Delay opening word documents

I am finding over the past 2 weeks that when double
clicking on a word document, it hangs for up to 25
seconds before opening. Yet doubling clicking on ms word
to simply open the program, will open the program itself
in 2-3 seconds.
I have a mobern spec lap top, up to date virus (VET)
protection, and a problem that has only recently started
to occur.
If I go into word first, and then select open and choose
a document, it still hangs for up to 25 seconds.
I am hoping someone may have an idea.

Is your laptop normally connected to a network? If so, does this happen when
you are connected to the network?
