Deleting any document

My document list seems to be growing, but I am unable to
delete any of them in this list. Why? When I wipe out
the letter or file or document, the title remains in the
list. This is all old stuff I would like to eliminate
forever. How can I do this? And how do I get rid of
that weird critter with the paper clip? I am using Word
2002 and have Win XP Home Edition.

To get rid of Clippy:

1. Open Word, press F1, when he shows up, right-click him and select
"Options, uncheck the "Use Office Assistant" option.

To clear your Document List (reset to empty):

1. Click the "start button, select "Settings, "Taskbar and Start Menu".
2. Click the "Start menu" TAB
3. I prefer the "Classic Start Menu" option since I like the previous
versions of Windows
4. Click the "Customize" button
5. Click the "Clear" button to empty the list completely.

Hope this helps!

I don't know how to delete Documents from the Windows Start menu (probably
by turning that feature off and back on), but in Word you can delete
specific files from the bottom of the File menu by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Hyphen
and then clicking on the file you want to remove (use with care; this
shortcut will delete *any* menu item you click on). Doing this also removes
them from the Getting Started task pane.

Thanks, Bill, I got rid of Clippy, but my document list
is still there, even though I have deleted the document
itself. I also prefer the Classic start menu, but I
couldn't delete the doc. lists with the customize
(clear). I get an error message that says the document
name or parth is not valid.... I have tried the
Cont./alt/hyphen, but that didn't work at all. Seems
that Word has a mind of its own. Any other suggestions?

From the windows start menu you have to find the folder that holds the
recent documents shortcuts and delete the shortcut from that folder. Which
folder it is depends on OS and configuration.
