detail time spent on task in timesheet

I need to find a way to split the time spent on a task into 4 categories on
the timesheet (and not blow up the number of tasks in the GANTT plan).

My customer wants to show the total time on the task (which will be imported
into the GANTT) + have that time divvied up between 4 task types :
production, testing, QC & modeling.

these task types we then want to disply in a cube view.

For example, 20hrs spent on the task, of which 4-8-4-4 spent on the 4 cat's
each.

the 20hrs goes into the GANTT update for the task, the 4-8-4-4 goes into a
cube view report.

how should i do this in Proejct Server?

Tonie,

in order to identify whether the effort is allocated to production, testing,
QC or modeling, you will need to use a custom field. Custom fields can be
associated to Projects, Tasks or Resources.

If different resources consistently perform different phases of the task
lifecycle then they could be assigned different custom field values and all
resources could be assigned to the same task.

If a single resource performs more than one of the phases then you'd have to
create multiple tasks in the plan.

Thanks, Paul, for your reply.

why not use the Plan Admin tasks button, and create 4 categories: QC,
Production, Modeling & Testing.

Team members can then update the tasks in their timesheets, + specify the
'split' using the admin pop-up.

What about the option to use the overtime - non-billable categories that we
do not need, and rename them + add 1 more? can we exclude these from the
'import timesheet into tasks' step?

if we could do both, report on actual work + have actual work sub-divided
between 4 categories, that would be ideal, + meet our customer's requirements.

keeping the 4-category split out of the GANTT plan is also a big plus.

do you see an additional way of doing this in project server?

In addition to Paul Conroy's excellent advice, I would caution you against
your plan to use Administrative time categories. If you do this, and your
resources report time in two places, won't this double their Actual Work
hours? I think Paul's original advice to you is absolutely solid. Create a
custom enterprise Task field with a Lookup Table that includes the four task
types you want to track. Then ask your PMs to insert that column in any
Task view, such as the Gantt Chart view, and set the correct value for each
task in their project. After doing this, they will need to save and publish
their projects. As a consequence of these actions, you will make these four
task types and their corresponding Work and Actual Work reportable in Data
Analysis views, which I think is what you want. Hope this little bit of
extra advice helps.
