Determining the best start date for projects

Nate

I have received a list of 20 priority projects for the upcoming fiscal year.
I have created "dummy" projects and assigned propsed resources based on
estimates. I dont have/want to enter in any dates. Can MS Project Server/PWA
analyze these projects and tell when the best time is to start each of them?
If MS Project can not do this, is there a product that can? Thanks!

Nate,
It sounds like you want the application to do the work for you. The type
of analysis that must be done to set up each project as you desire is a
complex process. For example, what is prioritized, the tasks of the
projects themselves? Ok, now what about the resources, how is their
priority structured? How is the "best time" defined? And many more
questions.

There are many aspects to setting up a workable plan for multiple
projects. The algorithm to do so is best left to the project manager -
in other words, this type of process is better done by a human.

Project does have a feature for resource leveling based on priority but
I think what you are looking for is way deeper than that.

If you have a well defined set of criteria, you may be able to automate
some of the actual plan processing but my guess is that the effort to
automate it would be better spent working the plan yourself.

Nonetheless, this is not a Project Server newsgroup. For that you should
post to our sister newsgroup, microsoft.public.project.server. But my
guess is you'll get the same or a similar response there.
