Differences in Graphics Files

I'm trying to build a PowerPoint presentation that is as compact as possible.

Please give me a website that can give me definitions and differences among
various graphics file types. For example, when should I use bitmaps, jpegs,
gifs, etc? What are the differences? Why use one over the other?

IMHO it's worth having a quick read of the whole tutorial, some times the
amount of pixels is just as important as the filetype (gif jpg etc)
