Difficulty accessing a couple of Excel 97 files

Using Excel 97; in trying to access a couple of my Excel files, I receive the
following error message:

"(file name) cannot be accessed. the file may be
ready only or you may be trying to access a read-only location or the server
the document is stored in may not be responding."

In the past there has been
no problems in opening these files. They were never saved as 'read-only'. I
am stumped...any suggestions? thanks

When you do a search for these files do any of them show up at any location?

How are you trying to open the workbooks? Are you using File/Open in
Excel or are you double-clicking them in an Exploring window, such as
the Desktop, to open them?
