Difficulty restoring Office 2000

I have an older Compaq Presario 5635 that had office 2000
and windows 98 installed. I recently had to reformat my
harddrive because of low performance levels, but before
doing so I made a back-up copy of many of my programs
including office 2000. After I try to resore the program
I can see it on the C drive, but I cannot get it to
function. I keep getting an error message that I must
install the program from its original location. There in
lies the problem. The reason I backed the program up in
the first place was the fact that I lost the program disks
during my move last year. I want to know if there is some
way of making the backed up version functional, short of
buying a new office program. Any help would be
appreciated.

Unless you have the original CD-ROM, you can't install the
program. Installation places numerous entries in the
Windows registry. If you have a copy of the previous
registry, you could import that, although success is
unlikely.

Talk to Microsoft----if you have proof of purchase you might get replacement
disks
