Disappearing Text Callouts

Why do text callout shapes disappear when I drop them onto my drawing? Other
callout shapes do not. I have a large graphic imported into the drawing, but
the text callouts disappear bo matter where they are dropped. May I somehow
chnage their properties so this does not occur?

check the layer properties
menu View -> Layer Properties

is a layer turned off or has its colour set to the same as the
background colour?
